I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
You probably noticed that there was no post from me last week, that's because I was in the middle of BlizzCon itself! This year was my first time attending BlizzCon in person, it was an absolutely unbelievable and unforgettable experience. Especially being among everyone at the Mythic stage when the new expansion and WoW Classic was announced.
There were some interesting things discussed at BlizzCon but nothing that have major implications for gold-making just yet. Both
and the new expansion
Battle for Azeroth
appear to be in very early stages of development, most of the panels/announcements showed concepts, prototypes and ideas rather than final products and features. Because of this there were no indication on timelines for release for both the new expansion or WoW Classic.
There were no mentions of profession systems, Auction House changes or gold-making activities in general
- although I did have questions ready for the developers that I didn't get to meet this year. I hope to submit those in upcoming Q&As hosted on the Warcraft Twitch channel as Legion draws to a close.
One announcement that will affect the game and potentially the economy in the short term is the new level scaling being introduced in the previous expansion zones.
If you choose to level up a new Allied Race—or if you ever just want to play something new—we’re making some improvements to the leveling experience that will allow you to more fully explore the conflicts and stories in the game’s leveling zones. Building on Legion’s level-scaling, we’re expanding the level ranges that each zone in classic Azeroth (and beyond) supports. This means you’ll be able to group with a wider range of friends and allies, while also being able to enjoy your favorite zones longer. Each of these scaling zones will have a wide range of levels it can support.On an even larger scale, we also want players to have the freedom to choose between different expansions’ content as they level up. So, for example, both Outland and Northrend might scale from levels 60–80, allowing a player to level exclusively in one expansion’s content, or to bounce back and forth between the two as they prefer.We’ll also be adjusting the rewards that can be earned from quests and dungeons, so that they scale in the same manner as the zones themselves. Our goal is to create a truly flexible experience throughout the world of Azeroth so that the choice of how you experience it is yours.We want to get these improvements into your hands as soon as possible, so you’ll start to see the initial stages of these changes in just a few weeks as Patch 7.3.5 rolls out to the Public Test Realm.

got picked to ask a question regarding this during the
WoW Q&A Panel
. The Wowhead summary documents it as such:
How are loot drop rates from world mobs going to work with new level scaling bands?
A: Scaling zones is going back through 12 years of history and trying to figure that all out. Basically the philosophy is if it drops from something now, it should still drop that item in the future.
However the nuance of Reckles' question was lost or misinterpreted by the developers. His question was more about transmog items dropping from particular level mobs and whether the scaling would affect that. Ion Hazzikostas responded talking about
, where it would make less sense if a mob that dropped that suddenly dropped some other kind of cloth because it was scaled to a different level. It's difficult to read between the lines here as there are several ways the developers could approach these changes and each would have a different affect on acquiring specific items from specific mobs or mobs within a specific level range.
One thing that is a bit easier to extrapolate is that with the ability to skip the content of an entire expansion (chiefly Outland), it may be more difficult to acquire materials from that particular expansion while supply of materials from other expansion may increase.

After all the BlizzCon madness one announcement was made shortly after the doors closed at the Anaheim Convention center. The release schedule for Antorus, the Burning throne. Note the following dates are for US realms, add one day for EU realms.
It’s been an epic few days for World of Warcraft, including the announcement of the Battle for Azeroth expansion at BlizzCon, but there’s one more announcement we didn’t get to: when you’ll be able to enter Antorus, the Burning Throne. We’ve now finalized the upcoming raid’s release schedule and are pleased to share it with you today!

Additionally, Legion PvP Season 5 will end and Season 6 will begin the same day that Antorus opens on Normal and Heroic difficulty (November 28).
If you haven't already been preparing for the raid as a gold-maker there is still a window of opportunity to get ready for the release. Some of the
goblins have been discussing their preparations such as
"I'm buying cheap
but I don't have great expectations for the price going up. The gems have really ruined the market, and the potential ilvl of those goods is too low to be desirable. But they still sell, and there is a chance that Blizzard will make them relevant still.
Flasks and herbs seem like safe bets. Especially with bots having a hard time getting back online.
920+ ilvl 110 boes are still selling well. Fresh 110s have a hard time completing content and people are always looking to fill that one slot where they have a crappy piece of gear. On my server at least."

"I've been shuffling for what has been damn near an impossible amount. There's been a massive influx of materials on (US) Illidan, and I've been shuffling ~20-50k materials/day. I have appx 3M worth of enchanting materials stockpiled. I also already have existing trade deals for when the raid drops, so i can start to sell off materials in bulk.
Sad thing is, if I didn't bother to buy up the materials (along with a few others) then we'd have experienced a total market crash on enchanting materials. Its quite miserable, actually. That being said, once the new tier is done and I've sold off my materials, I'm out of the game. Don't want to get stuck with tens of thousands of materials for an expansion that's going to end after this raid."
I would agree that now is the time to consider exit strategies as we begin the final stages of the Legion expansion. It's worth remembering that there are no more major content patches planned after 7.3.5 - unless Blizzard completely surprises us with some bonus one-boss filler raid while the Battle for Azeroth Alpha/Beta progresses. Keeping an eye on inventory and not overstocking on raid related items as the markets begin to decline through Antorus will stop you from being left with an abundance of materials that you can't do much with.

Legacy servers have been the talk of the community for many years and finally WoW Classic was announced at BlizzCon which I touched upon earlier in this article. But what does that mean for the gold-maker?
It was notoriously difficult to generate gold in Vanilla WoW, purchasing an epic mount was a major milestone. It's difficult to get in to specifics on what we could expect from an official WoW Classic server as there are very few details available from the development team. The barrier of entry to gold-making today is practically non-existent so it's also hard to directly apply strategies from the WoW of today to the original version of the game, especially since overall game knowledge is incredibly more prevalent today compared to what it used to be.
Comparing today's WoW with Vanilla WoW,
/u/notslashroar outlines some major differences in the economic side of the game
No server transfers, character boosts, tokens, battle pets, etc. Leveling is long and slow, and those all raise the barrier of entry significantly.
Fewer crafting professions (no inscription, JC) = more competition in each of the other crafting markets. No prospecting or milling for side profits either.
Loot was not shared for gathering (no multi tap nodes, no multibox gathering farming)
Zones didn't do cross-server phasing/sharding. You were stuck with the competition. So for example if you are farming and there are 5 other people farming, you are getting very little
The reduced farming productivity also means that there are just far fewer mats. That means fewer mats to buy for crafting (and to sell crafted items) and fewer mats to farm and do the same.
There was no such thing as transmog, so transmog sales aren't really a thing except on RP servers
I doubt there will be a way to get TCG stuff in the classic servers, so no TCG mount dupes or sales.
No kind of "passive income" such as garrisons/etc to add money to the market
Things like respecs, repairs, and AH posting price (for failed/canceled auctions) will be a much higher percentage of gold drained from the market than what you are used to.
Overall, there are fewer markets, less supply, more competition, everything's more tedious (like enchants), everything costs more in proportion to the value of items, and it is harder to get any kind of starting capital. It's also possible that the addon API won't support something as robust as TSM.
The Addon API is a very important point. Most of the modern day TradeSkillMaster functionality is based on current addon APIs that were simply not available in Vanilla WoW. Depending on the direction that Blizzard wants to take WoW Classic, it's possible that they will not implement any of the modern WoW quality of life improvements which would include Addon systems.

Depending on the life cycle of the server - Anything that is used to make Raid consumables has huge potential. Herbalism and Alchemy paired together. If you're more into flipping - Buying out the materials and potions / flasks on a Monday, and relisting for a Tuesday (Reset day) can net huge profits.

I saw this
post requesting an update to my webapp
and it didn't seem too hard to do so I've updated the blood-money webapp to support this (spelling Sargerite correctly was tricky however).
Here's an informal changelog:
Now includes best prices for primal sargerite. These are shown at the bottom of the page below the blood prices. (CSS isn't my strong point, so if someone wants to suggest a different layout I could try it)
Added a little subnote for

that it's alchemy only. Should reduce confusion for people who don't see it on the trader. Also this'll let me add more items like this if appropriate.
Icons are now retrieved from Blizzard's new media server which actually supports SSL, which should get rid of some scary browser warnings.
As requested I've updated the app to also calculate the trade-in value for
. It also tells you the cost of the obliterum that goes into it (in blood-money I calculate all prices as the 5th percentile of buyout), though my web-design skills are still hot garbage. The good news is that I did this in such a way that it should be easy(er) to add crafting recipes to the calculations now if that ever becomes relevant.
