Wowhead's 2017 Year in Review and Happy New Year
31.12.2017 в 08:56
2017 for the Wowhead team was a busy year with several major Legion patches and the Battle for Azeroth expansion announcement. Here's a look back at what we're particularly proud of.
Curious about major in-game milestones for
? Check out
our Warcraft Year In Review Post
The most visible change on Wowhead this year was our
new front page
! With these changes, we hoped to make the front page easier to browse, improve the visibility of Today in Broken Isles, and feature the Blue Tracker.
Today in Broken Isles
on the front page continued to grow, tracking the most important content from each patch. In 2017 we added tracking for Family Familiar, Greater Invasions, Lesser Invasions, Legion Assaults, Mythic Progress, and Broken Shore Building Progress.
We grew our presence on Discord by
partnering with JeevesBot
for guide lookups and news alerts! Now you can look up Wowhead guides and install the
through the bot. We also surpassed 40,000 users in 2017!
It's hard to keep track of all the content requirements in Legion so we launched the
listing your character's progress to unlock major Legion content like Argus and World Quests. The
was also updated with the additions to Broken Isles Pathfinder this year.
Dressing Room received major updates
in 2017, allowing players to create and customize Allied Races before they were playable on the PTR!
Wowhead strives to be a comprehensive general resource and we recognize the importance of specialized information sites. We've partnered with several in 2017 to enrich Wowhead's guides and tools. The Talent Calculator now
displays top builds, legendaries and trinkets
for each raid boss on Heroic and Mythic difficulty, powered by Warcraft Logs. Our Dungeon and Raid guides have received upgrades as well from Raider.io;
now sport information on top classes and party composition, while our raid guides display information on the World First Mythic Race.
launched Korean Wowhead
, featuring localized guides, news, and a blue tracker!
With our brand-new front page, the news team had greater freedom and creativity in article topics. We welcomed
as our new Esports writer,
as our WoW Historian, and
as our Economy guru...plus we started up monthly community spotlights on art and cooking.
Since Legion radically changed the pace at which we're accustomed to getting new content, we had to revamp our news team to keep up with all the updates. Gone are the days of a drawn-out PTR cycle followed by a datamining break when a new patch went live. In 2017, we had weekly PTR builds on top of new quests and surprise content on live servers. In Legion, the PTR cycle starts the week a new raid opens, which is already a busy time for the site. The scope of our content, and frequency of PTR updates, has drastically increased in 2017, and we've expanded our news team to maintain the quality you've come to expect while pumping out more posts than ever before.
Some of our news highlights this year were
datamining Antorus spoilers
Kul Tiras would be part of the next expansion based on datamined icon names, and posting all the plot twists for the
November 2017 was an especially busy and proud time for the staff with
WoW's 13th Anniversary
, and the start of the
. We saw our BlizzCon coverage
more than triple
in reach compared to any past year - no small feat considering how long we've been doing this.
A special thanks to the Wowhead dev team for keeping up with Blizzard's updated PTR schedule--which meant weekly builds and no downtime between content patches.
2017 saw a constant need for guides, appealing to seasoned veterans and fresh players. Here are some of the highlights:
Our class guide writers provided a variety of updates, including
Netherlight Crucible recommendations
, boss tips for
Tomb of Sargeras
Mage Tower Challenges
Quick Tips for New Level 110s
With the announcement of the Mythic Dungeon Invitational, we completely revamped our
Mythic Dungeon guides
. In addition to displaying statistics from
, we had Voulk of
partner with Squishei to provide information on the best route as well as tips for each notable affix.
Tomb of Sargeras
was the first major raid tier in which FatbossTV wrote all boss guides for Wowhead.
In addition to providing guides for each major patch topic, we expanded our new player guide offerings, with topics like
Tips for Alts in Legion
Leveling in Legion
Attunements for Fresh 110s
What To Do As A Level 1 Player
Wowhead at BlizzCon
BlizzCon 2017 was a busy time for Wowhead with the Wowhead Party and new expansion on the demo floor.
With your support, we doubled the
attendance in 2017! New to this year, we had a brand-new
autograph signing booth
and even more claw machines and prizes than before. Special thanks to
for organizing the autograph signing this year!
Our Battle for Azeroth coverage was a major success, drawing more visitors and social media reach than ever before. In addition to liveblogging and tweeting all of the panels, we spent hours in the demo room creating unofficial patch notes, writing down all the new
Class Raid Buffs
. In the evenings, we compiled all the juicy tidbits from outside the panels, being the first to report on important topics like
Legendaries and Titanforging
Antorus Release Date
Wowhead would not be possible without the support of our users! The staff works hard to provide high-quality features and guides to inspire our users to share even cooler things. Here are some guides and comments which stood out to us:
Voxxel continued to provide guides for new Legion zones, including the
Comprehensive Argus Guide
Nightswifty of the Achievements Discord has written a variety of detailed guides and comments, including
Glory of the Argus Raider
how to acquire the Lucid Nightmare
Pwuebear wrote the comprehensive
Brawler's Guild Guide
with tips for all new bosses for Legion.
A Month in the Maelstrom; Farming Cataclysm Mounts and Pets at lvl100+
The Littlest Mountain: An overview of ALL Mounts and Pets in the game!
PurgatoryWolf has some great writeups of complicated mounts like
Seeking the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph
Riddle Me This Mount
Keldesh continues to write great transmogrification guides, like
Show Your Allegiance Transmogs
Show Your Allegiance Transmogs
Sivation has a comprehensive overview to
Getting Started with Legion PvP
while Flamebreaker has a guide to
Honor and Prestige Farming in Legion
The Mage Tower Challenges were quite tricky at launch. Special thanks to all the users who shared tips for
Падение Тотема Скверны
Возвращение верховного лорда
BoxofBeer continued to leave comments with coordinates and videos on most every quest and treasure page! This came in handy especially for achievements like
Shoot First, Loot Later!
and NPCs like
The Many-Faced Devourer
Jjanchan has faithfully maintained the
Guide to Artifact Weapons
Guide to Legion Legendaries
, as well as a slew of other comments, throughout the year--no mean feat with the variety of changes both systems faced.
Squirekel continues to write and maintain dozens of guides on Wowhead! Some of her more recent ones are
Adventurer of the Broken Isles
Glory of the Orgrimmar Raider
We wanted to close out our year in review with some messages from Wowhead staff!
Anshlun (News Writer and Translator)
2017 was amazing, as it was my first year frequently writing for Wowhead. I would like to thank everyone for their support, compliments, and feedback. I had a blast covering the last few patches from Legion and BlizzCon, loving its madness! May 2018 be even better, with more craziness and speculations to cover! A Happy New Year to everyone!
Calligraphy (Datamining Developer)
This was my first full year datamining with Wowhead, which means I finally felt much more integrated with the team. While we’ve worked on a ton of neat stuff this past year, probably the most exciting for me will be released next year (so I don’t get to talk about that just yet!), in general the data we’ve found on Legion has been neat to sniff out. In particular, a few of our internal tools were revamped this year (which.. probably is more exciting to the team than some of you 😉 ).
In terms of what’s been fun to mine in particular: finding neat clues in broadcast text that allowed conversations projecting what may happen in Battle for Azeroth, but also combing spells and noticing the Dark Titan Transformation spell (and what that indicated in relation to Antorus). We also added legendary spells to our patch “diff” page, refined some of our other “diff” related scripts, and also added a ton of new things that we didn’t used to track.
I’m looking forward to another year working on our datamining tools, and another year of seeing how Azeroth shapes up!
Dirtside (Senior Software Engineer)
Greetings, fellow Azerothians! I've spent the last several months tinkering with the innards of Wowhead's servers, and you'd be amazed how many gnomish engineering devices there are crammed into this thing. Discombobulators! Flame turrets! De-weaponized death rays! Anyhow, assuming those dastardly goblins don't wreck all my careful work, by this time next year Wowhead should either be able to transform into a 90-foot-tall mechagnome, or open a portal between any two bars on Azeroth. Hmm, that gives me an idea for a voice-activated, self-brewing, fel-powered keg...
Jerek (Lead Developer)
Thanks to all of our users who contribute to or visit the site! We try to bring all of you the best site features, but it's you using those tools, leaving comments on database pages and news posts, submitting all sorts of guides, and sharing the site with others that makes Wowhead what it is!
Ketsuki (Assistant Site Producer)
Thank you to all our readers and supporters for making 2017 fantastic! This year for me has been a nonstop hype train of excitement. I started this year with a few ideas and articles that were out of the box and community driven. Warcraft is more than just a game to us and many of us have taken it outside of the game and tailored it to be included in our other hobbies! My hope going into 2018 is to work even harder and bring even more article series to Wowhead that cover even a broader community base!
Big shout out to all who have worked with me this year to make this year a memorable one!
Nobbel, Fatboss, Lulaboo, Straya Obscura, Lady Rosse, Cally Kari Shokka, Runesael, Tsepish, Euphyley, & Nevirra!
All of our Class Guide & Guide writers!
J!NX Crew, Discord, Twitch & Blizzard
Panser for all you have done this year!
AnnieFuchsia whom I look forward to working with this year!
I also want to especially thank those who work alongside me on the Wowhead Team, for I have never seen a team who works so hard, day and night and even holidays. You guys are the best.
Perculia (Site Producer)
So...this is a little weird since I wrote the main post and now I'm writing a quote within the post I made...but I wanted to write something more personal in addition to the site summary :) Pepe told me to.
I want to thank everyone for embracing our vision for news and guides this past year. I felt strongly we needed to revamp Wowhead's front page and news schedule after seeing the changes in Legion, and we've had overwhelming support with the new site layout and around-the-clock news coverage. PTR updates are my favorite type of news to cover, nothing beats the feeling of discovering something and sharing it with everyone. We've seen a ton of growth and interest in our PTR coverage in 2017--thank you for all your support.
I also want to thank our expanded content team. With more writers on board, I had more time to focus on long-term improvements for the site, and create articles on topics I feel passionate about with less stress and time-constraints. I'm really proud of our expanded BlizzCon 2017 coverage.
2017 was a challenging year on the datamining front as we never got a break from the PTR. Historically we'd have some time to patch up parts of the site in between PTRs, but now it's more of a juggling act to provide PTR updates and live feature improvements at the same time. Thank you to the Wowhead dataminers for keeping up with all the changes, and to all our users for being patient as we adapted to the new Legion schedule.
I also want to thank all of our contractors and collaborators that joined us in 2017. Thank you for choosing Wowhead as your home for sharing information. We try to highlight as many contributions as possible, reaching a wide-ranging audience, through news spotlights, more-frequent guest posts, increased social media, and guide highlights. I also want to give Panser a special shoutout for her work on Wowhead Weekly and helping me adopt my rescue my cat, Brightpaw :)
Thanks for all your support in 2017 and look forward to sharing all the Battle for Azeroth updates with you in 2018!

Thanks everyone who is following us on Youtube and likes our datamining and other content videos. We had a great time updating our Dressing Room to support all new Blizzard features added in Legion, so you could use our tool to check out your future characters in their favorite transmogs. Can't wait to see you next year with Battle for Azeroth datamining! Looking forward to datamining broadcast text for BFA ending :)
Squishei (News and Guide Writer)
I want to say thank you to the community for a fantastic year of working at Wowhead. I started helping with front page news and guides in April of this year and it’s been an exciting time that has been full of WoW content - from Patch 7.2’s
Mage Tower Challenge scenarios
all the way to 7.3.2’s
Post-Antorus Raid Cinematic
Wound in the World (Spoiler!)
. It was super fun trying to complete the
as fast as possible to allow everyone to see how Legion was going to end.
Of course, we can’t forget about BlizzCon 2017. It was amazing to see all the comments discussing every detail about the upcoming expansion. The Wowhead team spent many hours summarizing panels and even more in the demo room trying to note down all the details about BFA’s
and the upcoming
. I had a ton of fun compiling it into posts for everyone to see (and watch people freak out a bit at some of the changes!). The biggest highlight of the WoW panels was having Ion Hazzikostas mention the ending of Legion being spoiled by datamined broadcast text.
My favorite set of articles this year involved datamined broadcast text - It’s almost like a bunch of puzzle pieces that you have to try to fit together. We had quite a few of these, but my favorites were the
Antorus Dialogue Analysis
and the Quest Chains for the Allied Races:
. My second favorite set of articles this year was the “First Look” articles for the last boss of the raid tiers:
. We know that people are excited to see what the final boss of each raid tier has in store on the Mythic difficulty. I love seeing discussions in the comments on how hard the boss appears to be or how cool the bosses look. I’m glad the Wowhead community loves these articles as much as I love putting these articles together.
2017 was a fantastic year for WoW with lots of content, updates and news to the game. I’m excited to jump into the new content for 7.3.5 and eventually Battle for Azeroth which will hopefully be soon! Thanks to everyone who chats in
our Discord server
, contributes to the
and the database, uses the
, and anyone who visits the website; have a Happy New Year and I look forward to more WoW in 2018!
The biggest thank you goes to all of YOU out there that continue to use, love, support all of Wowhead and all of us. We hope 2018 is an even better year for us here, with new features, tools, giveaways and more to come!
