Vicarious Visions announced today that the studio has completed its merger into Blizzard Entertainment. Announced
15 months ago
, the longtime Activision subsidiary was brought into the fold to effectively replace the now defunct
Classic Games Division
working on Diablo II: Resurrected. With the completion of the merger, the ~200 person team is now fully dedicated to existing Blizzard games and initiatives, but will remain independently located in Albany, New York.
Last October, it was also announced that
the studio would drop the Vicarious Visions name
, and with the completion of this merger and the implication of their tweet suggesting they be followed on the official Blizzard Entertainment account, it appears that to finally be the case. Similar to other satellite offices, rumors persist that the branch will be titled Blizzard Albany to reflect their physical office location in Albany, New York, although for all intents and purposes the studio is now synonymous with Blizzard Entertainment.
Formed in 1990, Vicarious Visions was a developer of several minor Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles, known for porting titles such as Star Wars Jedi Knight, Doom 3, and the acclaimed Tony Hawk Pro Skater series to other platforms. Acquired by Activision in 2005, they became a support studio which helped on a number of projects including Spider-Man, Guitar Hero, Transformers, and Skylanders, though the studio received critical acclaim for their work in porting Destiny 2 to PC and developing the Warmind expansion in 2018. After Bungie split from Activision, Visions began remastering previous Activision titles, achieving major success in developing the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater rereleases, before being merged into Blizzard Entertainment to replace their faltering classic games division. Since then, the sub-studio gained high praise for the success of Diablo 2: Resurrected, particularly its graphical improvements, and is
currently working on Diablo IV
.
